[Bug 1072032] [NEW] nautilus cannot handle computer locations

2012-10-27 Thread mdmcginn
Public bug reported:

What I did: in Nautilus, Go Home
What I expected: to see icons for mounted drives, desktop, etc.
What happened: Message: 'Could not display computer:. Nautilus cannot handle
computer locations'

Same problem with bookmarks for remote sftp locations - 'Nautilus cannot
handle sftp locations'

Began when I upgraded to Quantal Beta.

Resembles old gvfs bugs, such as Bug #185756
Workaround suggested by others: sudo mv /usr/local /usr/local.old sudo mkdir
/usr/local

2011-06-23 Thread mdmcginn
Yes, it is still an issue. In Nautilus, I right-click and choose..
Open with Movie Player. - Movie Player opens but doesn't show anything
playing. No levels/visuals.
Open with Audacity - no sound, but visual levels are moving.
Open with Banshee - it plays.
Open with VLC - it plays.
Open with xine - no sound, but visual levels are moving.
Open with Sound Recorder - it plays.

[Bug 762918] Re: Natty Screensaver freezes system after some period of inactivity

2011-05-09 Thread mdmcginn
Using Blank Screen at the office, I can't always get a terminal prompt
with Ctl-Alt-F2 and Ctl-Alt-Delete doesn't work either. Pressing the
power button does

Using Pictures Folder at home, I was greeted with one of my pictures,
and the cursor moved, even changed to a hand sometimes. Music was still
playing. But I couldn't get the picture to go away by using my mouse or
keyboard. I could use Ctl-Alt-F2 then Ctl-Alt-Delete. Because of monitor
settings/problems, I can't see the terminal prompt, and I haven't tried
any other commands to work around the issue at home.

[Bug 145152] Re: [gutsy] Pictures folder shows all pictures in $HOME

2010-12-22 Thread mdmcginn
It's not working as intended for me, on Gnome 2.32.0/Ubuntu 11.04:

$HOME/.config/user-dirs.dirs
said
XDG_PICTURES_DIR=$HOME/
not
XDG_PICTURES_DIR=$HOME/Pictures

Why isn't there a GUI to configure the screensaver? Why can't the
screensaver directory be specified to be different than the Pictures
directory, as it was with the previous version?

[Bug 219062] Re: Could not read from resource error when playing encrypted DVD

2010-08-15 Thread mdmcginn
Yes, that worked for me too, but the documentation and error messages
should be much clearer. It's counter-intuitive for sudo apt-get install
not to actually install what's necessary. Is that for legal reasons, the
way that Audacity doesn't export to MP3 out of the box? Then Totem
should say that clearly - The DVD you've just inserted, The Time
Traveler's Wife, will not play until you run sudo
/usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh in a terminal. As it is, the
implication is, Oh, do you actually want to play encrypted DVDs? I
didn't know.

On the other hand, maybe this is a different kind of bug. This is the
first commercial DVD I haven't been able to play. Has the industry come
up with a new encryption variant that doesn't work out of the box the
way the previous version did?

[Bug 520969] [NEW] Screensaver never turns on

2010-02-12 Thread mdmcginn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

Opening new bug per https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
screensaver/+bug/397892/comments/54

Screen never fades, unlike bug 491926. Running gnome-screensaver-
command -a makes my screen fade and the Pictures Folder display, but it
doesn't happen automatically even after hours of inactivity at night. I
have XScreensaver installed but not running (an attempt to customize my
screensavers further).

System/Preferences/Appearance/Visual Effects is set to None on my GNOME
desktop.

This has happened for months, and I've rebooted several times after the
release of bug fix package gnome-screensaver - 2.28.0-0ubuntu3.1.

I don't think I have any GTK context menus open. I sometimes run VNC,
VirtualBox and Remote Desktop Viewer, but not right now and not all
night.

[Bug 181553] Re: Totem ignores LF in Windows m3u playlists but not CR/LF

2008-01-21 Thread mdmcginn
Yes, it does work. But I believe that Totem should work on all m3u files
created using Windows Notepad or gedit. It shouldn't be necessary to use
vi to edit them. Can Totem ignore that extra ^M?

[Bug 181553] Re: Totem ignores LF in Windows m3u playlists but not CR/LF

2008-01-17 Thread mdmcginn
Changing status back to Incomplete, since the m3u file is as valid as
any file can be that has no standard to meet.

[Bug 181553] Re: Totem ignores LF in Windows m3u playlists but not CR/LF

2008-01-17 Thread mdmcginn
If there were a recognized standard for m3u files, you could say that
an m3u file was broken. But since there is no official standard, it's
hard to say that a file doesn't meet the standard. I think that Totem
should be able to read any plain-text list of music files, separated by
carriage returns and/or line feeds. The files were created with basic
plain-text editing software. I don't think we can open a bug on gedit or
Windows Notepad, since they seem to be doing what they're supposed to
do. The mp3 files aren't broken, in case you were wondering. See
http://hanna.pyxidis.org/tech/m3u.html for more about the adhoc m3u
format.

[Bug 181553] Totem ignores LF in Windows m3u playlists but not CR/LF

2008-01-09 Thread mdmcginn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

When I edit an M3u playlist in gedit 2.20.3, specifically by rearranging
the songs by cutting and pasting lines within the file, I get messages
such as, Totem could not play
'File://home/michael/Music/ws.letbelight.h.mp3 /home/michael/Music/bach-
bwv852a-grant.mp3'. I'm editing a file that I originally created in
Windows Notepad on Windows XP. If I use Notepad through WINE to edit the
file, I don't have any problems. If I type the playlist directly into
gedit. it also works. I wonder if the problem comes when some lines end
with CR/LF and some with LF. The working file is at
http://biographiks.com/totem-bug-2.m3 and the non-working file is at
http://biographiks.com/totem-bug.m3 I'm using Totem Movie Player 2.20.0
