[Bug 60448] Re: .xsession-errors file grows out of control & saturates disk space

2015-09-14 Thread mlaverdiere
Is it time to close this report (i.e. is journald finally integrated in
Ubuntu, replacing .xsession-error)?

If not, then happy 9th birthday bug report!

[Bug 60448] Re: .xsession-errors file grows out of control saturates disk space

2015-02-08 Thread mlaverdiere
I confirm manuellopezibanez's stagement: On my Fedora 21 system,
journald is used and there is no .xsession-errors file, like those I
still found on other Ubuntu machines around the house.

I'm just wondering if there are still legacy apps (or apps not so well
integrated with gdm/kdm/dbus), that may try to drop output in a
.xsession-errors file...

Anyway, I will be more than happy to close this report when Ubuntu catch
up on journald... and then, to stop posting birthday comments on Sept.
14 of each year ;-)

[Bug 356022] Re: unable to mount or browse samba networks

2012-05-16 Thread mlaverdiere
Like mentioned earlier, it seems that the failed to retrieve shares
list from server problem may me related to the lack of samba package on
an out of the box Ubuntu installation. Having the samba package
installed appears to fix the problem or, at least, in more complex
situation, be one of the steps involved in fixing it. See the default
package listing fro 12.04 where there is no samba package, while other
related samba package are present:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/natty/ubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.manifest

** Package changed: gvfs (Ubuntu) = samba (Ubuntu)

[Bug 356022] Re: unable to mount or browse samba networks

2012-05-14 Thread mlaverdiere
I'm on Precise 12.04 and was somewhat experiencing the same issue, i.e
getting the failed to retrieve shares list from server when trying to
reach SAMBA shares on my NAS (WD MyBook World Edition).

I've read and try a lot of things on this issue (among others,
rearranging the order of the name resolve string in smb.conf), but
nothing worked. Even the smbtree command was unsuccessful, as it was
not retrieving any shares list. But, I was able to connect to a share by
issuing the nautilus smb:// command. A the end of the day, the only
thing that solved all this was to install the samba package, which was
not installed by default. Since then, retrieving and connecting SAMBA
shares through Nautilus work without a glitch.

Shouldn't the SAMBA package be installed by default then?

[Bug 356022] Re: unable to mount or browse samba networks

2012-05-14 Thread mlaverdiere
Thanks Michael for your input. As my own problem is already fixed, my
question was in relation with the purpose of this bug report, i.e. to
fix things for the future and for other users.

So here's my proposition: if we want users to have a no-fuss experience
when trying to access SAMBA shares (as everyone knows, SAMBA is quite
common on various NAS, etc.) that may mean that the samba package
should be installed by default (so, available on installation media, or
at least, be installed upon first update). From my experience, that
doesn't seem to be the case right now. See the default package listing
fro 12.04 - samba package is not there (while other related samba
package are present):
http://releases.ubuntu.com/natty/ubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.manifest

[Bug 903422] Re: Mount / Provide access to Android 4 (Ice Cream Sandwich, ICS) MTP devices

2012-01-14 Thread mlaverdiere
I'm on Ubuntu 11.10, using a Samsung Galaxy Nexus with Android 4/ICS.

What I observe is that connecting the GN in ptp mode behaves almost
exactly as it if it was connect as a USB mass storage device, i.e.,
automount, icon (camera) appearing in the Launcher Nautilus,
possibility to create/move/delete any kind of files/folders, etc. Even
with Banshee (and Rhythmbox I presume), if you put an .is_audio_player
at the root, the GN will me recognized as a Media/Audio player!

Anyway, I guess that if the mtp connection was providing the same kind
of access as ptp (by default, GN is set to connect as mtp device), it
would be easier for novice users to have their GN phone works with
Ubuntu.

Now on Natty Beta 1 with latest updates, the problem appears to be

needs another bug report?).

[Bug 708382] Re: cannot create custom preferred applications

2011-04-02 Thread mlaverdiere
Now on Natty Beta 1 (freshly updated), the problem appears not only
related to browser/mail apps, but also to multimedia player, since
Banshee is not registered as one available multimedia app. (while it's
now the default music player!), but instead as a personalized
selection... See screenshot 1 attached,

This lead to another problem, as the Totem icon/app. appears as the
application to launch to listen to music in the Ubuntu-Upper-right
menu, instead of Banshee. See screenshot 2 attached in the following
post.

So my take on this is that this report should not be treated as a
wish, but as a bug. There's a problem (lack of coherence, attention,
etc.) somewhere with 1) how default applications registered themselves
in the Gnome/Unity framework; and 2) How the user can change this
selection.

Thanks.

2011-04-02 Thread mlaverdiere
Indeed, using gconf-editor may allow to set some default app. (but
that's obviously a workaround, since a regular user should be able to
rely on something more straightforward, i.e. a working gnome-default-
applications-properties). But even with gconf-editor, you can't select
a mailer, since there's no specific option (key) available for this...
See screenshot attached.

[Bug 555736] Re: Lucid rhythmbox causes Firefly to die on Netgear NAS

Just want to share my experience on some particular points:

- Rhythmbox on Lucid makes Firefly installed on my ARM server crashed,
but *NOT* my other Firefly installed on another Pentium server

- Banshee works well with both servers

- Some fellows on the upstream Rhythmbox bug report
(https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=619309) points out that the
bug should be resolved in Firefly (mt-daapd) itself, but that the
project seems to be inactive since a while (2007). While that seems to
be true, please note that there is some recent activity in a fork-based
Firefly project: http://git.debian.org/?p=users/jblache/forked-

[Bug 60448] Re: .xsession_errors file grows out of control saturates disk space

2010-08-21 Thread mlaverdiere
Is there someone from the Ubuntu Security Team /Ubuntu Review Team
listening to this report?

This bug, as I've experienced it at first (I'm the initial reporter) and
as it is experienced by other reporters here, can clearly crash down a
system, so it's not just some ordinary risk less bug. I've reported
this almost 4 years ago and at first, it was flagged as high
importance but since then, it has been reflagged as low importance
ans left unresolved even if there are regular reports showing that it is
still a serious threat ...

What does it take to get some attention on this bug?

Thanks.

(Please note that, for the time being, I'm not personally affected by
this bug, so my activism is only the result of an irrepressible
desire to have my preferred Linux distribution do the right thing with a
longstanding bugs representing a serious security/stability risk.)

[Bug 588155] Re: randomly gnome-settings-daemon fails to start

2010-07-16 Thread mlaverdiere
This is a me too report.

On my laptop running Ubuntu Lucid, my findings is that the problem
always occur upon wake-up (resume) process, after I have moved my laptop
(while in sleep mode) from one wi-fi area (e.g.: home) to another wi-fi
area (e.g.: work), i.e. when network-manager has to change the
connection to the newly available pre-registered SSID (which often
fails). Then, all the gtk apps revert back to to default (ugly!) gtk
theme. In order to get the ambiance theme back, I have to open the
theme applet. The problem doesn't seem to happen otherwise.

[Bug 597940] Re: duplicate icons and miss icons in the gnome-panel

2010-07-02 Thread mlaverdiere
My experience with Ubuntu Lucid so far, on 3 family laptops that I
administer, is that gnome-panel and related applets/notification stuff
is completely erratic and unstable: double icons, missing icons,
notification stopping randomly, unpredictable placement, etc.

See these other (there may be others) reports:

[Bug 597940] Re: duplicate icons and miss icons in the gnome-panel

2010-07-02 Thread mlaverdiere
This bug is so common, that it is reported on Planet Ubuntu (with some
sort of workaround):

http://en.andregondim.eti.br/?p=160

C'mon folks, let's do something with this bug report (or any another one
related that is more well documented if you want). There's no way I can
consider this bug as low importance since:

- Gnome panel and related applets/notification stuff is at the heart of the
Ubuntu Lucid experience
- Ubuntu Lucid is a LTS, not just an ordinary interim release.

BTW, I'm clearly not a developer, but I'm ready to help as a long time
Ubuntu advanced user who could do some testing/log based report with
clear and helpful directions.

Thanks.

[Bug 363768] Re: Jaunty - Rhythmbox doesn't show DAAP share

2009-04-28 Thread mlaverdiere
No, avahi-browse --all doesn't list all the available shares. It lists
only the mt-daapd one, that runs on the same laptop (the same way
Rhythmbox does). So. no external share listed, whether by avahi-browse
--all or by Rhythmbox,

[Bug 363768] [NEW] Jaunty - Rhythmbox doesn't show DAAP share

On my laptop with Jaunty RC, Rhythmbox doesn't show mt-daapd shares

[Bug 312459] Re: Intrepid: can't remove/move to trash files on removable media (UMS/USB digital audio player)

2009-03-02 Thread mlaverdiere
I did run rhythmbox --debug , but found nothing in the terminal output
that I can understand to be relevant for this bug...

...and, shame on me, I just don't know where to find the debug log file
or to redirect the terminal outputl to a file... I've googled for this,
but didn't find anything useful. If someone can tell me how to
create/locate the debug log file, I'll try it again and come back with
the log file...

BTW, it could be an upstream bug, but before taking this for granted, I
think we should investigate to know if it's not related to the way
Ubuntu handles media access, permissions, etc. Again, this bug has just
appear after an upgrade to Intrepid (on my 2 laptops)...

[Bug 312459] [NEW] Intrepid: can't remove/move to trash files on removable media (UMS/USB digital audio player)

2008-12-30 Thread mlaverdiere
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Using 2 UMS digital audio players (DAP - Iaudio 7 Samsung YP-S3) with
2 different laptops, with Rhythmbox, versions 0.11.6 (on Intrepid) and
0.11.5 (on Hardy), here's what I'm experiencing:

The 2 DAP shows up correctly in Rhythmbox and I can move files on them
with both system. The problem is that with Rhythmbox on the Intrepid
laptop, the options remove and move to trash (my translation from
French) are greyed out in the contextual menu related to a file on a
DAP. So basically, with the Intrepid laptop, I can't delete files on
the DAP using Rhythmbox, while I can with Nautilus (or any other file
manager or the command line). I'm not experiencing this problem with
the Hardy laptop,

[Bug 188639] Re: laptop will not sleep after idle time

2008-05-03 Thread mlaverdiere
I've found that idle time for suspending set in gnome-power-manager

Closing the lid makes my screen blank (whether or not I set blank the
screen in GPM), but nothing else.

[Bug 188639] Re: laptop will not sleep after idle time

2008-04-11 Thread mlaverdiere
I'm on a Compaq Presario V2610CA laptop with Ubuntu Hardy (Beta) and I'm
experiencing the same problem, i.e. idle time is not respected for
suspend/hibernate. The problem was also ocuring with Gutsy. I've looked
in /apps/gnome-power-manager/actions/ and everything was right, i.e. set
to suspend, as I set it in the gnome-power-manager applet.

One interesting thing to note is that when I was using Kubuntu Gutsy
(some weeks ago - I'm a switcher!) things were working right, i.e. idle
time set for suspend in the KDE power manager utility was respected. So
it could be a Gnome problem...
