Ok, the workaround is better, but still does not give a time estimate,
only a percentage estimate, and the icon doesn't obey the visibility

Re: [Bug 291813] Re: rhythmbox-metadata process uses 100% cpu, even after closing app

2011-02-12 Thread rfugger
Rhythmbox-metadata still uses 100% cpu when files are changing
continuously, but it seems to close down fine in 10.10.

Maybe there should be some kind of back-off mechanism? I remember
similar bugs filed with the nautilus thumbnailer some time ago. Not
sure how or even if those were resolved.

[Bug 675076] Re: Resume from suspend fails on Compaq CQ61

2010-11-14 Thread rfugger
Tried uswsusp and tuxonice, no success. Tried the following parameters
with pm-suspend, alone and in various combinations, with kernel,
uswsusp, and tuxonice sleep modules:

--quirk-vbe-post
--quirk-vbemode-restore
--quirk-vbestate-restore
--quirk-s3-bios
--quirk-s3-mode
--quirk-vga-mode-3
--quirk-save-pci

No success.

Discovered that hibernate works fine though (with
SUSPEND_MODULES=ath9k to make wireless work on thaw), so I'll use that
instead.

[Bug 675076] [NEW] Resume from suspend fails on Compaq CQ61

2010-11-13 Thread rfugger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Suspend seems to work, but resume hangs with a blank screen, wireless
indicator light indicating that the wireless is disabled, and apparently
the cpu working hard, since the fan begins to work harder and harder
blowing hot air out of the case.

After shutting down by holding the power key, the system hangs on boot
unless the battery and power supply are removed for five seconds before
booting.

Tried the resume debugging procedure here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend

With no hash matches in dmesg. The system clock is correct after
rebooting, so something's not right. Maybe removing the battery and
power supply clears the data stored in the RTC...?

Re: [Bug 291813] Re: rhythmbox-metadata process uses 100% cpu, even after closing app

2010-02-15 Thread rfugger
I know what's causing the bug. It's when I'm downloading many video
files simultaneously into a subdirectory of my rhythmbox library
directory when I have rhythmbox set to watch my library for new
files. As the downloading files are continually being updated,
rhythmbox continually tries to index them.

My workaround has been to disable rhythmbox's watch my library for
new files, as I've found that feature terribly buggy for years now.

[Bug 411350] Re: gnome-screensaver not functioning

2009-11-26 Thread rfugger
So, to sum up Kevin's post above (comment 42), the fix for this bug is
for Ubuntu to apply the following two patches to their version of X:

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/patch/?id=db568f9eabf3450d8a023597ff007df355b13ea8
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/patch/?id=6b5978dcf1f7ac3ecc2f22df06f7000f360e2066

This will stop X from resetting IDLECOUNTER when DPMS off is sent, which
turns the screen back on right after it shuts off.

[Bug 32589] Re: Selection doesn't change when visiting a special location

2009-10-25 Thread rfugger
Update: behavior in karmic koala RC:

1. Open File System in tree view
2. Open /etc
3. Click on /etc/acpi to view the contents of that directory
4. Click on /dev to view the contents of that directory
5. Click the little down arrow beside /etc to collapse that directory's tree
view
6. Click the back button in the toolbar to return to /etc/acpi in the main file
list pane. Now, /dev remains highlighted, which is still wrong, since we are
back in /etc/acpi.
7. Clicking on /dev does nothing, even though we are not in /dev. (Should take
us to /dev.)
8. Nothing else seems broken though, so this is an improvement.

[Bug 40874] Re: Thumbnail settings don't work as expected

2009-03-26 Thread rfugger
Still getting this bug in intrepid. The cooling-off period of 3 seconds
is not enough to avoid constant 100% cpu usage while downloading
torrents with multiple videos and viewing them in a nautilus window.

This has nothing to do with file size, and everything to do with it
being silly for the system to be bogged down continually be thumbnailing
incomplete and constantly-changing video files. Surely there must be a
way to avoid this, while still achieving expected behaviour when simply
writing a file once. Bug #8329 mentions only thumbnailing once the file
is closed, rather than on every change...?

[Bug 291833] Re: tree view item does not disappear when i unmount a usb drive

2008-11-02 Thread rfugger
I've attached gvfs-mount -li logs for before and after unmounting the
device.

I do not have to open a file from the device to replicate the bug, just
browse to the root directory of the device before unmounting.

In my testing I have noticed that if I am not in the root directory of
the device when I unmount, then the bug does not occur. I have also not
been able to replicate this bug on my USB key, although I had previously
replicated it many times on Hardy and assumed that it would still be
there on Intrepid. So I can only confirm the bug on my Sansa Clip music
player, which is also having issues being recognized by rhythmbox
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/291810).

[Bug 291810] Re: MSC music device doesn't appear after intrepid upgrade

2008-11-02 Thread rfugger
I ran

rhythmbox -d file:///media/SANSA%20CLIP 2 rhythmbox.log

with the Sansa mounted and have attached the output, as well as the
output from lshal below. From rhythmbox.log it appears that rhythmbox
thinks my Sansa Clip is a Nokia 770??? Below is the pertinent section:

[Bug 32589] Re: Selection doesn't change when visiting a special location

2008-11-02 Thread rfugger
I frequently notice a similar thing when using the back/forward buttons.
(I am using intrepid.) For example:

1. Open File System in tree view
2. Open /etc
3. Click on /etc/acpi to view the contents of that directory
4. Click on /dev to view the contents of that directory
5. Click the little down arrow beside /etc to collapse that directory's tree
view
6. Click the back button in the toolbar to return to /etc/acpi in the main
file list pane. Nautilus highlights /etc in the tree view, but doesn't expand
the tree view to display the subdirectories of /etc. (This is where things
begin to go wrong -- nautilus should probably expand the tree view and
highlight /etc/acpi, where I actually am viewing.)
7. Click the little right arrow to expand the tree view to display the
subdirectories of /etc like nautilus ought to do already.
8. Now the tree view breaks down:
  - clicking on /etc does nothing
  - clicking on subdirectories of /etc does nothing
  - clicking on other directories under File System does nothing
9. Furthermore, if I collapse /etc again and click around to other directories
under File System, /etc remains highlighted and even though I can navigate to
other directories, clicking on /etc still does nothing. I've attached a
screenshot of this behaviour (/etc remaining highlighted while I'm browsing
/dev.)

Collapsing File System resets the tree view so it works properly
again.

** Attachment added: /etc remains highlighted while browsing /dev

[Bug 288594] Re: Chess board disappears after one move in 3d mode.

2008-10-31 Thread rfugger
After upgrading to intrepid, the problem is improved, but not completely
resolved. Now the chess window flashes to black for approximately a
half-second whenever I click on the board, but the board reappears
after. Whenever I click anywhere else on the screen other than the
board, all or part of the chess windows turns black permanently until I
click on the board again (or where the board would be), which triggers a
proper redraw.

3d mode is playable now, at least.

[Bug 291810] [NEW] MSC music device doesn't appear after intrepid upgrade

2008-10-31 Thread rfugger
Public bug reported:

Device is Sansa Clip 4GB. Worked fine under Hardy, but now it doesn't
appear in rhythmbox under Intrepid. It shows up if I enable the MTP
plugin in rhythmbox, but all my songs are already transferred via MSC,
so I can't see them. I can see the raw USB storage in the file browser
just fine.

[Bug 291813] [NEW] rhythmbox-metadata process uses 100% cpu, even after closing app

2008-10-31 Thread rfugger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I store videos and music in the same directory, and have rhythmbox
watching that directory for new music. While I am downloading video,
the rhythmbox-metadata process uses 100% cpu constantly. Since
upgrading to intrepid, that process remains active at 100% cpu even
after I close the rhythmbox app. It isn't even set to be a low-priority
process (nice = 0).

[Bug 291813] Re: rhythmbox-metadata process uses 100% cpu, even after closing app

2008-10-31 Thread rfugger
Turns out the rhythmbox app main process was still active after I closed
the app, probably related to another bug I just filed
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/291810) where
my Sansa Clip player fails to show up in rhythmbox under intrepid. The
rhythmbox process was launched by the system as:

 rhythmbox file:///media/SANSA%20CLIP

Perhaps failing to communicate properly with the device (which worked
fine under hardy) caused the app to shutdown improperly.

Also the 100% cpu at nice 0 still isn't cool, especially when there are
no new music files for rhythmbox to possibly be indexing (only new video
files). And it shouldn't index continually while I'm downloading, just
when I'm done.

[Bug 291833] [NEW] tree view item does not disappear when i unmount a usb drive

2008-10-31 Thread rfugger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Using Ubuntu 8.10, nautilus 1:2.24.1-0ubuntu1.

I have the left sidebar of nautilus set to display tree view.
Normally two items are shown: Home Folder and File System. When I
plug in a USB device and it automounts, I get a third item for that
device. When I right click on the USB device and select unmount (or
eject, which is sometimes available) immediately after mounting and
before browsing any files on the device, the tree view returns to the
normal two items. But if I browse any files on the device first, the
usb device remains in tree view, although an error occurs if I try to
access it. If I plug the device back in again without closing the
nautilus window, another copy of the device appears in the tree view.

The device ought to disappear from the tree view regardless of whether
I'm browsing files on the device when I unmount it.

[Bug 288593] Re: Chess uses 100% cpu only when I play black

2008-10-27 Thread rfugger
A little more investigation shows that it uses 100% cpu whenever I start
a new game using the new game command. The only way it uses a
reasonable amount of cpu is when I have ended a game on the previous
session, and the new session starts with the default game (human: white
vs. comp: black).

The 100% cpu usage persists on games started with new game even if I
restart the app, as long as I have made a move before restarting. If I
haven't made a move, the new game is lost and the app restarts with
the default game, so it is impossible for me to play black without
having the 100% cpu.

The behaviour doesn't change in 3d mode. (I am unable to make more than
one move in 3d mode due to another bug.)

As I mentioned, I am using Hardy. I will be upgrading to Intrepid in
the next days.

I created a new user and the problem is the same.

I notice that the app spawns a new gnome-gnuchess process for every new
game, and those processes are the ones using all the cpu. If I start
one new game, and then start another, the system will have two gnome-
gnuchess processes running, each using 50% cpu. WTF?
