[Bug 315927] [NEW] No sount in Ubuntu Jaunty

2009-01-10 Thread smoku
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

 * The Problem *

At some point around 7-9.01.2009 I lost the sound on my Ubuntu Jaunty
laptop.

When I play some tune in Totem I see it playing (visualisation),
I have the main volume all the way up and not muted in the panel sound applet,
and in Sound Preferences window.
On the Output pane i have my HDA Intel - ALC268 Analog device selected.
At the Applications pane I see a Totem player and its volume is all the way up
and not muted.

When I open the PulseAudio Volume control I see the Totem player playing and
the volume bar bouncing to the music.
At the output devices I see HDA Intel - ALC268 Analog device with vlume up
and the volume bar bouncing.

BUT I hear NO sound at all.

 * The Cause *

I opened a Terminal and launched alsamixer, but there is only PulseAudio card
available with one Master volume control which is, as I described earlier,
all the way at 100% and not mute.
After some digging at launchpad bugs I found alsamixer -c 0 and BINGO - when
I got alsamixer with HDA Intel I saw that the Front channel was at 0% and
muted. When I unmuted it and turned its volume up I finally got sound on my box.

The problem is that I couldn't get it fixed with tools available in the
GNOME package. The old gnome-volume-control gave access to all cards and
all its volume controls. The 'alsamixer' is to complicated for average
Joe User. And even knowing that the command existed I couldn't get the
volume issue fixed without arcane knowledge of the real and virtual
alsa sound devices and -c option to alsamixer.

[Bug 199960] Re: error starting GNOME Settings Daemon

2008-03-24 Thread smoku
Uninstalling xserver-xgl is not a solution.
Without Xgl server (running on nVidia drivers only) Compiz is unstable, Emerald
leaks memory as hell - this renders Compiz desktop unusable.
You may search launchpad for related bugreports. This is related to buggy
off-card texture storage. Nvidia drivers are broken and push testures to system
memory, but never frees it back. The more on-card memory you have, the longer
it takes this bug to hit you, but it will hit you. So, you cannot count on a
stable system with nVidia texture-from-pixmap implementation + Compiz.

So far, the solution was to install xserver-xgl. This gives very fast and
stable Compiz desktop.
With this regression, one cannot have stable Compiz desktop on nVidia cards.

You will have many complaints by Gutsy-Hardy adopters if you do not fix
this.

So far the overral Hardy experience for me was a major upgrade from havily
broken Gutsy and Feisty.
This regression makes Hardy yet another Ubuntu release that breaks things that
worked fine before...

I think the problem might be elsewhere that suggested before.

1. On the GDM login screen change your session type to Failsafe terminal
(The one that launches only one, bare xterm window)
2. Log in.
3. In the xterm window type 'gnome-session' and press enter...
4. Voila... GNOME starts correctly, everything works fine.
gnome-settings-dameon too.

So... The problem might actually be somewhere in the logon sequence.

Desktop folder icons handling is broken. They are not read from selected

Trashcan icon is also from the fallback theme, not the main theme
selected. Terminal icon that I have on desktop is completely lost and

I think it's specific to LiNsta theme. But it worked fine with Nautilus
2.20 and regression happened with 2.21.6.

1. Please download LiNsta http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php

http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Vista-

2. Extract to ~/.icons/

3. Modify ~/.icons/LiNsta-0.3/index.theme to have:
[Icon Theme]
Inherits=Vista-Inspirate_1.0,gnome
[...]

4. Modify ~/.icons/Vista-Inspirate_1.0/index.theme
[Icon Theme]
Inherits=nuoveXT.2.2,nuoveXT-1.5,nuoveXT-1.4,nuoveXT-1.3,nuoveXT-1.2,nuoveXT-1.1,nuoveXT-1.0,gnome
[...]

5. Select System - Preferences - Apperance / Theme - Custom... - /
Icons - LiNsta-0.3

You will see NuvoeXT folder, computer and trashcan icons on desktop
instead of . I also have a gnome-terminal launcher on desktop which icon

Gnome Bugzilla #511592 may be related to lost positioning and sizes.

But I doubt #511592 is related to inability to customize item icons.

I compared Nautilus 2.20 and 2.21.
In 2.21 when I right click a desktop item and select Properties, in
the following properties window the item icon is not a button anymore
and I cannot click it to select e custom icon for an item.
It works fine with 2.20 (in Gutsy) though - item icon is clickable and shows
icon browser.

2007-12-23 Thread smoku
Public bug reported:

After recent upgrade of Ubuntu Hardy, Epiphany does not show flash anymore. I
see a message that I need to install flash plugin.
Going to about:plugins does not show flash plugin anymore. Java plugin
disappeared to. There are only Helix DNA plugin, null plugin and unix print

[Bug 58210] Re: Unable to add tasks in calendar, get invalid time value when clicking save

It works for americans - it works. :-/
The rest of the world should switch to en_US, plain ASCII and ANSI standards.

Cute...

[Bug 133657] Evolution loops on bad date format dialog

2007-08-20 Thread smoku
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

After last upgrade of my Gutsy the default polish date format was set
to: 20 VIII 2007.

Now when I create a new appointment in Evolution Calendar, the start/end dates
are as follow:
Czas: [22 VIII 2007] [18:00] aż do: [22 VIII 2007] [19:00]

I get an error message that the date is incorrect and two identical modal
warning dialogs:
Nieprawidłowa data (Incorrect date)
  [ OK ]

As soon as I click the only [OK] button or close the dialog via X window
button, the focus returns to date entry field which has the newly
changed date format 22 VIII 2007, the validation routine triggers and
pops up the modal warning again. I click the OK again and the story
repeats rendering the whole Evolution application unusable blocked by
two simultanous modal dialogs.

[Bug 124383] Re: epiphany crashed with SIGSEGV

2007-07-06 Thread smoku
Application is allowing the plugin to crash it, and it's not a bug?
Great...

Is expectance that an app shouldn't crash the whole system is also Wishlist?
Congratulations on the attitude and for your great help Ubuntu.

Thankfully Novell and RedHat are more caring of their users.
