1) Right-click on desktop and chose: Create document-> New Document -> Empty
File.
2) Open the new file with gedit and type some text.
3) Select the text with the mouse cursor and left-click after the text.
4) Then press the middle-mouse button to paste the text.

I have just upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04 and still cannot paste with the
middle mousebutton. So on my system this is still a problem.

Currently its not possible to redefine shortkeys in gedit for
commenting/uncommenting, save, open etc. Hopefully this will be included
in the future.
