This seems related to this bug:

But they say the problem might come from Xorg that gives false
brightness values about the LCD screen.
On my HP Mini 1000, removing any dimming option in the gnome-power-
manager preferences is a good work around.

I confirm this bug for Intrepid.
Gnome doesn't play any Alert Sound when everything is checked in
system-preferences-sound.
I have my internal pc speaker unplugged (because I hate it) but still have the
mod active:

So it should be coming from ping itself?
Can someone second that? What is the -b option? I don't see it in my man ping

At least to reproduce the steps, I had to use ctrl-shift-a/q/w on Intrepid

Open a terminal (Applications Accessories Terminal)
Type:
brasero -g ~/brasero.log
Hit Enter.
Then brasero should open up, reproduce your bug. And then close
I could reproduce this in 8.10.
Open menu Places / Computer
Right click on your cd/dvd player, choose Eject (make sure you didn't have any
cd, and that it's not mounted).
An error dialog should popup.
Try alt-tab to another application.
Now try to alt-tab back to the error dialog. You can't.
Confirmed in intrepid 8.10.

The volume bar doesn't hide/close when focus is gone.
