Interestingly, this used to work for ages, and now suddenly popped up all of a sudden. Running `sudo kbd_mode -s` worked for me too. In Debian we do this in the Debian installer because it is running within a bterm and thus can't detect it's running on the Linux console. But we never do this for an installed system. Apparently Ubuntu took that code snipped and dropped the check for being running within the Debian installer, and thus erroneously run with --force when DISPLAY is empty (typically from unattended upgrades and such), with the resulting observed effects of this bug report. In my case, I traced the issue to the keyboard-configuration package postinst script, which ends up calling 'setupcon --force --save' which in turn calls 'kbd_mode -u' To reproduce: sudo apt install --reinstall keyboard-configuration setupcon documentation states: "--forceDo not check whether we are on the console. Notice that you can be forced to hard-reboot your computer if you run setupcon with this option and the screen is controlled by a X server." Also just started seeing this after updating from Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 to Ubuntu 18.04. The only relevant thing I can think of, is that I may have changed the default login manager to GDM. Hi, I'm having the same problem with 18.04. The command "sudo kbd_mode -s" (scancode (RAW) mode) works fine as well as the "-k" argument (key code mode (MEDIUMRAW)) as well. Thanks Kieran. I think either synergy or uinput could qualify as "some program left your keyboard in the wrong state" as mentioned in the kbd_mode docs. So those use cases are less surprising. What I would like to know is what part of the normal desktop experience (gdm3/mutter/Xorg/gnome-shell/other) is creating similar issues and leaving the keyboard in the wrong state. I'm on 16.04.4 LTS and started experiencing this very recently after an update and reboot probably. I think that I noticed this in fact as of today. As I said, console-setup. I think cyphermox took the final changes in the merge of 1.166. It was some time ago, so you are probably not hitting this case. Was it triggered by a package update for you?
