I had the same problem after migrating from ubuntu 8.10 to ubuntu 9.04 ( gdm ). Just tested and the problem still persists for me in jaunty. OK, sorry about that. Even though gdm is not buggy as such, preload worked for the intrepid gdm and not for jaunty.
