[Bug 109760] Re: Top and Bottom Screen Panels Stopped Working Properly in Ubuntu Feisty
I got the same behaviour as originally described. (Ubuntu 7.04; No 3d desktop) Applications lose their min, max, close buttons and the title bar. Desktop is not showing icons or responsive. ALT-TAB doesn't work, only one application can have focus, and it covers the Applications menu bar. It's something that goes wrong in gnome-session I guess. Opening gnome-terminal doesn't do/show up anything. Opening Root- terminal works, I then type gnome-session, and everything starts up/comes back to life. Logging out and back in, (even ctrl-alt-backspace to kill X(sic)), and it still does the same thing. I will try deleting the gnome session file as described above. I attached my session file. ** Attachment added: My Gnome session file after running gnome-session to fix the desktop-manager. http://launchpadlibrarian.net/9046712/session -- Top and Bottom Screen Panels Stopped Working Properly in Ubuntu Feisty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/109760 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 109760] Re: Top and Bottom Screen Panels Stopped Working Properly in Ubuntu Feisty
Just to clarify, I personally don't have the problem anymore, thanks to the method described by WSW (see my comment at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome- panel/+bug/109760/comments/14 ). So far, the problem has not reappeared after that one fix. What I was trying to say at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source /gnome-panel/+bug/109760/comments/16 is that I had not used Beryl throughout, i.e. just regular Ubuntu Feisty with GNOME and a few additional Themes. -- Top and Bottom Screen Panels Stopped Working Properly in Ubuntu Feisty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/109760 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for gnome-panel in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 109760] Re: Top and Bottom Screen Panels Stopped Working Properly in Ubuntu Feisty
Try to re-start the desktop managerby pressingctrl + alt + backspace Or in terminal type sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart Or killall gnome-panel These problems are probably due to Beryl as it seems a bit hard on systems try also to re-start Beryl manager right click Beryl icon for options and then enable Beryl in select Beryl manager option. I had these problems in Ubuntu 7.04 and Sabayon linux so I installed Mepis 6.5 and that seemed fine till I got the same problems so now I am back to Sabayon linux and I don't mess too much playing with settings leave well alone! I am now a great fan of Sabayon linux as everything is installed by default plus it has two games installed and the desktop looks great! On my removable HD's I also have dual boot XP and Ubuntu 6.10. this is a great way to check out distros having removable HD's. PCLinuxOS will also be another super distro which comes out 24th May. With regard to re-sizing windows with Beryl running it can take some time for the window to move and if you widen the window the min and max buttons re-appear. I hope that some of these help someone. -- Top and Bottom Screen Panels Stopped Working Properly in Ubuntu Feisty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/109760 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 109760] Re: Top and Bottom Screen Panels Stopped Working Properly in Ubuntu Feisty
I found a simple fix to the problem although I still don't know the cause of the bug. My simple fix is go to the hidden directory ~/.gnome2 and delete the corrupted file ~/.gnome2/session. After deleting the file, simply reboot the computer and the top/bottom panels will re-appear. Everything is working fine now. By the way, I did not have Beryl running on my computer. -- Top and Bottom Screen Panels Stopped Working Properly in Ubuntu Feisty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/109760 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 109760] Re: Top and Bottom Screen Panels Stopped Working Properly in Ubuntu Feisty
I was trying to report a similar bug when I saw this one. I am having the same problem with the top and bottom panels disappear when I open any application. For example when I open an application, it will always open from the upper left corner covering the top panel. If the application uses full screen, the application will cover both top and bottom panels making them not accessible. My problem started after I tried to make Firestarter start every time I turn on the computer. The following are steps of what I did and caused the panel problem. After I installed Firestarter using Synaptic, I went to System - Preference - Session - Start-up Session. I clicked on Add New Item. A dialog box opened up. In the command line I typed Sudo Firestarter --start-hidden and then OK. I closed the Session Manager and reboot my computer. I noticed that Firestarter did not start after I re-boot. So I used Session Manager to repeat the add new item several times. I still cannot make Firestarter to start after re-boot. Then I gave up. After the above failed attempts, I opened Firefox. I noticed that the top and bottom panels disappeared behind Firefox. So I tried to open other applications and I found out that the applications always open from the top left corner of the screen. The applications also hide the top and bottom panel. This problem makes using Feisty very inconvenient. Is there a configuration file that tells an application where to open on the screen? Where is this configuration file? Can I manually reset the configuration? -- Top and Bottom Screen Panels Stopped Working Properly in Ubuntu Feisty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/109760 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 109760] Re: Top and Bottom Screen Panels Stopped Working Properly in Ubuntu Feisty
I also tried logging in using Failsafe GNOME mode and everything seems to work fine. The top and bottom panels appears as normal. However, if I log in using normal GNOME mode, the top and bottom panels still disappear when I open an application. Similar to Ohbother01, when I used Session Manager, I also enabled Automatic Saving of Session Information and also saved the current session. I thought that was necessary to save the new configuration. But after that I have the panels disappearing problem. -- Top and Bottom Screen Panels Stopped Working Properly in Ubuntu Feisty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/109760 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Another thing I just noticed is that Alt-F2 does not work. Also, I cannot resize the window of an application. The minimize button on the top right corner of an application also disappeared. [Bug 109760] Re: Top and Bottom Screen Panels Stopped Working Properly in Ubuntu Feisty
Thanks for your quick response. Are you asking about re-adding the Workplace Switcher applet, or the main pair of Panels? I had tried to re-add the Workplace Switcher applet in regular mode, as described above, but I did not see any results. So I tried again, with zero results. In Safe GNOME mode, I saw both copies of the applet that I had added, plus, I think, the original one, for a total of three copies on the bottom right. It looked weird: three tiny icons for each window in my main workplace, all moving around in unison, instead of just one icon. It looked like a bug until I figured it out, and removed the extra copies. Now, I'm OK in Safe GNOME mode. Changing from Safe GNOME mode to Regular Mode, the Workplace Switcher applet vanished again, and all of the other problems above reappeared, as well. As for the main pair of Panels (top and bottom), how would you re-add them if you lose them (e.g. as happens to me if I use Regular Mode)? Also, when I use Safe GNOME mode, it says that it's running without any start-up scripts. Could these scripts be the source of the problem? Where can I find these scripts? I'd be happy to look at them or attach them here if it would help. As above I am also having both panels dissapear and that leaves only a right click option on the desktop. If the right click option had a reset button or even a log out button I could re-boot as it is I have to press the computer reset and re-boot. I did not have this problem in Ubuntu 6.10. I am sure that this is a bug and will be sorted out in the near future. [Bug 109760] Re: Top and Bottom Screen Panels Stopped Working Properly in Ubuntu Feisty
A couple of additional problems: Trying to add Workplace Switcher Applet to the bottom panel does nothing -- no applet is displayed there. The only way to close an application is using File Quit, again because the window borders or frames are missing around applications. If an application does not open maximized, then it obscures only the left part of the top panel, but there is no way to move the application window down to show the rest of the panel. The icons on the top panel keep getting mixed up and moved out of place. It is not al;ways possible to move them back, even after I unlock them from the panel. -- Top and Bottom Screen Panels Stopped Working Properly in Ubuntu Feisty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/109760 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for gnome-panel in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

The closed-source video driver is for ATI. I have a relatively new Dell computer, so I think the ATI card is a recent one, and the current driver is used (not the legacy one).
