I have a similar problem with a Samsung smart phone in Ubuntu Studio 14.04. I don't use Nautilus, but I can copy files in Thunar file manager from the device connected in MTP mode to local hard drive. However, I can not open the same (source) files for reading by e.g. VLC. There is nothing in 10-local.rules other than the one line I gave:
$ cat /etc/udev/rules.d/10-local.rules
ATTRS{idVendor}==054c, ATTRS{idProduct}==059a, NAME=WALKMAN
I share your frustrations with it suddenly failing to work with the latest
version of ubuntu, I really recommend you check out Philip Langdale's site and
his response to my questions - which probably mirror your own.

This is part of one of the answers he gave me:
Now, you’re probably going to tell me that this worked before, and it’s true
that gvfs-gphoto2 appears to offer normal filesystem operations but it’s all a
facade, as discussed elsewhere, and it’s constantly copying files to/from /tmp
when you think it’s just reading and writing. This process is fragile and not
something I would endorse. But if you really want to use rsync, it’s the only
way. I’d recommend using go-mtpfs in that case or adding a udev rule to avoid
marking the walkman as an MTP device so that gvfs-gphoto2 gets used again.

You need to add a PPA to your system by the developer (Philip Langdale), his

MTP is a protocol by Microsoft so you would expect it to work under Windows.
Despite appearances your Walkman is not just a typical USB memory stick and
some quite clever code has been written to make it appear that way.

You also need to edit your udev rules, in my case this involved editing this
file:
/etc/udev/rules.d/10-local.rules
It has a single line that simply identifies the device and nothing else:
ATTRS{idVendor}==054c, ATTRS{idProduct}==059a, NAME=WALKMAN
To determine what the idProduct is going to be for your model you can
enter 'mtp-detect' if you have it, or use 'udevadm monitor' - let us no
