Hardy 8.04 when using the icon in rhythmbox, the volume is adjusted by
2% for each 'click' of the scroll wheel. When using the tray icon, it is
adjusted by 10%.

Red arrow : Notification area icon (course and not so perfect)

Yes, you can actually change the volume by scrolling your mouse wheel in
the rhythmbox tray icon, this probably will be cut off for future

Could you make a screenshot of the notification area icon you are using?
The rhythmbox icon doesn't do anything with the volume, are you sure you
don't speak about the mixer icon rather?

Desktop
Hover the mouse over the volume icon, either in the system notification area
or on the toolbar of Rhythmbox, and then use the scroll wheel on my mouse to
increase/decrease the volume.
