I've run into this bug a number of times also, but it's happened for me
due to permission errors rather than my ipod running out of space.
Often when I plug in in my ipod, it gets mounted as root:root instead of
my desktop user and if I forget about that and try to copy stuff to the
ipod, I get a

This bug still has unconfirmed status upstream. WTF? It was first
reported in 2006. Here I was trying to demonstrate to my son how well
the open source model works :-(

a really low number of users if you prefer, that bug got no duplicate in
years and there is lot of ipod users there

There are two independent issues:
1. system does not cope if you copy over more than the ipod can store.
In this case it seems there are too many error messages generated and

I realize that this is similar to Bug #144292 but that was closed due to
some conflated issue with Xorg. Xorg did not crash for me.
Whatever Xorg's behavior this is definitely a bug with Rhythmbox's
behavior.
