I get the same hanging behavior with Evince Document Viewer 2.22.1.1
under Hardy (release) 8.04, with the following PDF:
http://www.ets.org/Media/Tests/GRE/pdf/Math.pdf .
It's the practice math GRE subject test. Evince has a problem when
scrolling down to problem #10 or so. The computer appears

Could give you a backtrace of the failing version, but without symbols it
doesn't look helpful.

It happens not with all files, but at least with an attached one. Just
enter the presentation mode (F5) and try to make a selection.
By the way, if you try to make a selection in this mode (with any file),
Evince selects the whole text on the page, and there is no way to select
separate words.
Thanks for your report, does it happens with all the pdf files you're
trying to see or only with one of them? If so can you attach the pdf
file to the report? May you tell us a few steps for trigger the bug? Do
you have the Visual Effects enabled? Does it happens without them?
