auto-opening anymore

Ubuntu 16.10 uses nautilus 3.20 which is obsolete at upstream. Hell,
even 3.22 is going to be obsolete soon. Upstream never back-port fixes
to older version and newer version can not be compiled with older gtk
version on Ubuntu.

How can a non-working feature from upstream be merged into a stable
Ubuntu release without review/trying out?
And if Gnome releases are always work-in-progress, then Ubuntu should
not "freeze" the buggy state for half a year, but forward to its users
not only security updates but also all feature
