Those upstream fixes (https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome- shell/issues/349) were actually authored by Canonical. They will appear in Ubuntu when we ship gnome-shell 3.32 (likely Ubuntu 19.04). Note however the high CPU (not the animation smoothness) fix
