Public bug reported:

Please re-assign this bug report as needed:

When I was using Xwindows if the system ran out of memory one of the
applications that was running was killed. Now that I am using Wayland
instead the mouse and the keyboard stop responding and using a hotkey in
order to switch to a different virtual console doesn't work any more.

My guess is that a process vital for wayland to work gets killed since
wayland isn't obviously connected to the user experience in the view of
many possible metrics.

My computer is using intel embedded graphics. But as gnome-shell
currently tends to occupy an additional megabyte per second (there is a
second but ticket on launchpad for that) and as I get the bug reports
for a mathematics program that is able to find big solutions, if needed
I frequently read "system becomes unresponsive" messages nowaday.
