Myself and another user (Andy Voutour, noted above) have not encountered the bug as yet in the Hardy beta or the Release Candidate. I can confirm the existence of this bug, it has happened to me in Gutsy as well. It seems to happen only on laptops, and it generated a scary amount of heat as well.
