Thank you for the tip! I switched to Jaunty and I no longer see the
messed names in the name field. I also remember that the bug disappeared
from Intrepid's Evolution (I don't know when though).

Comments from upstream (following the upstream links) point this as a
known problem on Google's GMAIL. See

One could also try newer versions of Evolution (Intrepid and Jaunty) to
see if this has been addressed there.
