Reproduced using: c=`tput cols`; w=$((c-1)); printf "% ${w}s\tb" a

Expected: 'a' is displayed, followed by a space and 'b' on the next line
Actual: 'ab' is displayed, with no tab (space) between 'a' and 'b'.
