So, the Ubuntu bug fixing policy seems to go as follows: 1. tell the user to install debuginfo 2. tell the user to go turn off the features causing their bug 3. let the user go find the bug themselves 4. when the user finds the bug, go tell them to file it with the original project's bug tracker Please tell me why anyone in their right mind should *ever* file a bug with Ubuntu. They don't have the people to fix it or care to fix it. Why do I go to Ubuntu at all? Why not just go to the Evolution/GNOME guys directly in the first place? I have had similar problems on 7.10 with evolution hanging. I am using Evolution with the OWA Adapter to hook into Exchange Server. My problem was that when I was typing emails into the TO/FROM when writing an email, the autocomplete would show but then immediately hang. The entire evolution app would hang for about 2 minutes but it would always eventually come back ok. Very annoying though - to the point of unusable for everyday business. Having googled this, it seems several folks have problems with evolution hanging in general. As an earlier post suggested, turning off the Pidgin synchronization helps. However, that wasn't my problem. I was able to workaround my problem by turning of all syncrhonization with the Excahgne Global Address book: Edit / Preferences / Uncheck the Global Adddres Book and any other address book under your outlook account. So I use only my local contacts folder and avoid the exchange contacts because I think its the network calls hanging which causes the UI to hang. This is annoying as you do not have your contacts but it can be alleviated by using Automatically create entires in Address Book when responding to email and make sure to use ony your *local* addresd book. Set this up under Edit / Preferences / Mail Preferences / Automatic Contacts. So you can quickly rebuid your address book locally. I've been using evolution/owa for about 18 months. In general, evolution (or OWA) is buggy in the way it does multithreaded. Or rather, it does not do multithreading. It often does network invocations (say to the Exchange Server) in the UI Processing thread and so the user preception is that the program often freezes and hangs. This is a real shame becuase if this could be fixed, it would be an excellent appilcation. It is so close to being excellent. 1. Create a honking large address book in Evolution 2. Turn on the plugin that we've been talking about, and enable Preferences/Mail Preferences/Automatic Contacts periodic contact synchronization. Yes, disabling that plugin solved my freezes. Is there a long-term solution to this issue? It seems awfully bad behavior to have, even in a plugin, to freeze the entire UI. Should it be disabled? You probably have synchronisation with Pidgin enabled on Evo -- See Preferences/Mail Preferences/Automatic Contacts. Then what will happen is every so often the synchronisation will start -- for each buddy in Pidgin Evo will search for a match in the Contacts; if not found, then it will add it in. Large addressbook = long time to do that. Can you please disable the Automatic Contact, and monitor again?
