I'm not making any assumption, the GNOME defaults in ubuntu are optimized for the ubuntu desktop, that's not ideal but that's better than having broken defaults on ubuntu. Nobody denies there is a bug there, but the issue is not the default selection, it's that the current mechanism has no fallback

Huh? This is a bug, and you are forcing your choice of firefox on everyone. If firefox isn't installed, then this shows the incorrect application, breaks gnome support for http urls and requires the user to dig through to find this setting and fix it. It'd be better to use gnome-www-browser which
