I'm running Jaunty and have a file that causes the same error, so this
bug is not entirely fixed. It's an .avi file encoded with XviD. Trying
to open it with Avidemux causes an error too, so maybe the file is
damaged. However, that shouldn't prevent Nautilus from handling it
correctly.

I have the same problem in Intrepid, but with a wmv file. The file is
a wmv, so it doesn't contain any subtitles (in reference to one of the
previous posts), and I also don't think this is related to the
thumbnailer. I wasn't getting a thumbnail for the wmv at first, and
thought that might be
As an addendum to the previous post... I haven't had this problem with
any other file or file type, including the OP's mkv.

It works in interpid so I mark it as fixed, unless someone thinks it is

nautilus does nothing special on video but totem install a code to add a
video properties tab to nautilus and that seems to be this one creating
the issue, are you sure you get the bug if totem-gstreamer is not
installed? did you try?

not confirming on intrepid but that seems rather a totem issue than a

Sebastien: I do not think so. That thumbnails do not get created, yes,
that might be a totem issue. But what has Totem to do with opening
properties windows - and that is what this bug is about.

nautilus unable to open properties from context menu of an .mkv file
bsolar: Right, after removing totem-gstreamer, thumbnailing works well.
(creating properties windowi is still and issue though) That is a
separate bug, I think.

Here (hardy 64bit) the problem seems related to the thumbnailer. When
it's running on .mkv files (and slowly trying to create the thumbnail,
failing) I get the same dialog about the window construction. After the
thumbnailer is done for the directory, the properties work again.
I guess the
About the thumbnailer problem, a workaround is to install totem-xine. I
am not sure if I should open a separated bug for this.

totem-xine does not help here (and yeah, the thumbnails do not get
created and totem has problems with my mkv files altogehter, but that is
beside the point, unless it points out that the issue might be burried a
little bit deeper)

To clear a bit my previous posts: totem-xine solves the fact that the
thumbnailer fails and is slow but does not solve the fact that when the
thumbnailer runs the properties window does not appear.
--
nautilus unable to open properties from context menu of an .mkv file
yep, I understood. even with totem-xine. it still takes too long when
creating thumbnail, which is not created anyway and is replaced by a
stock icon.

This is not my experience, but I have removed totem-gstreamer after

yeah, you are right, I was a little bit misleading - when you rename
