You have been subscribed to a public bug:

when I issue the command:

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

to stop the gnome display manager it all seems to be working fine until
I get to the line that reads:

running local boot scripts (/etc/rc.local)

where it hangs.  I've left it sitting there thinking for a few minutes
before I go into the terminal mode by pushing:

<cntrl> + <alt> + <F1>

and reboot the system.

Any idea on what the issue could be?
