Have you already installed ubuntu-restricted-extras? This package allows
you to select MP3 as a audio output format for ripping your cd.
Please tell us if ubuntu-restricted-extras solved your problem. Thank

No I haven't installed that before.
I see it's available in Add/Remove channels, have installed it and it's
working nicely.
