file-roller supports extracting RAR files through the unar package since
Ubuntu 12.10. It also can use rar or unrar from the rar and unrar
packages. Therefore I mark this bug as fixed.

non is command line, if you wrote: /usr/bin/unrar-nonfree
then in folder,click to open
- Ubuntu 9.10 32 bit
- RAR file created with WinRAR 3.90 under Windows XP
Error message Archive Type is not supported. I created different RAR
files, always the same result, and was able to uncompress them with
unrar 3.90 (downloaded at rarlabs.com). So the archive was not
corrupted.

My problem was related to a series of broken RAR archives which cannot be
opened with either the command line tools or the Windows tools.
The bug can be closed.
