This is definitely a bug and not a question. There is a setting
somewhere, apparently unexposed by the configuration interface, that
significantly changes the behaviour of the applicaiton. I'm sure users
aren't supposed to wipe out their profiles and start from scratch on
every version of Ubuntu. W

I am running 8.10 and this does not happen with a new user I've just
created. My settings have migrated along several old installations and I
guess something was lost in the process. Is there a gconf key I need to
set or something like that?
