That issue is weird and I doubt it's GNOME specific. If you run gnome-
session does it hang? Does it work if you use noacpi? Do you have
anything useful to ~/.xsession-errors? Is your lo interface correctly
configured?

could you log in on a text terminal and run
date
to check that the date is sane. gnome wont start if the date is before 1970,
