It is stuck in anniversary mode and won't let me create new
appointments. It asks me to go to another calendar but there doesn't
seem to be a way to create such a calendar. I would, in the end, like
to have everything personal on one calendar.

what details do you get in the properties dialog for the calendar? do
you get have any error on the command line if you run evolution there?
