Is your laptop configured to suspend when the lid is closed? When it suspends, it will turn off networking to save battery. Go to System - Preferences - Power Management and make sure On AC Power and On Battery Power - When laptop lid is closed aren't set to suspend or hibernate. If that doesn't

No, it was not configured to suspend or hibernate. A while back, I bought a new laptop which is now my main one. The other one is more or less stationary, and I don't close the lid too often anymore. It was not consistent. Please keep the bug open, and I'll test some more with newer distros.
