[Bug 3642] Re: Suspend (or hibernate) does nothing

2006-08-08 Thread Sam
When logged in hibernate works, starts up with a prompt w/ the ability
to switch users.

Suspend from gdm appears to do very little, monitor shuts off, HD light
flashes.

Hibernate gives an authentication failure.

--

As suggested, we can remove hibernate from gdm, but suspend seems to
function.

2006-08-04 Thread Yleeyas
Confirmed (sort of). Looks like gdm 2.14.10 fixed my suspend problem (see
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/50703)
I don't normally hibernate, but when I tried it (from the login options menu) I
get the authentication failed message as mentioned above.

[Bug 3642] Re: Suspend (or hibernate) does nothing

2006-06-01 Thread David M. Carney
Using a Compaq Desktop 64 bit system, Model SR1750NX. This computer has
onboard ATI graphics and 1 gig ram (shared with the video card). The
fglrx driver from the Ubuntu repositories is being used.

This computer will suspend successfully from Windows XP.

When Hibernate is selected from the Logout box, or Suspend or Hibernate
is selected from GDM, the screen goes dark, but the computer is locked
up. I literally have to unplug the machine (no reset button) and plug it
back in to regain control of it. I can also put the computer in
Hibernation with the Hibernate button on the keyboard, but this results
exactly as with GDM or the Logout box.

When I Hibernate with Windows XP, the screen goes dark and the green
power light on the front of the case flashes.

With Ubuntu, it's like the computer starts to go into Hibernation, but
then something stops it from going all the way into Hibernation.

System is fully updated as of 5/31/06.

David:

I think your bug is subtely different to the one described here. If you
wish to follow up on it I would suggest filing a seperate bug report. It
is probably worth testing your machine with the fglrx drivers completely
removed (perhaps by blacklisting the driver). This will let your rule
out your binary driver as the cause of the problem.

2006-05-26 Thread Lee Tambiah
Im running dapper with full updates, on an IBM Thinkapd R50e.

FROM THE GDM:

Suspend:- Shutsdown into sleep mode correctly and appears to start up
after pressing a key but the display remains blank.

Hybernate:- Requests Confirmation Dialogue box but clicking hibernate
does nothing.

FROM GNOME DESKTOP

Suspend:- Does same as GDM above

Hybernate:- Goes to hybernate but then comes back on with user/password
dialogue box and screensaver.

[Bug 3642] Re: Suspend (or hibernate) does nothing

2006-05-19 Thread Andrew Jorgensen
For myself it appears that suspend works but hibernate gives the
authentication failed message as Matthew East notes. I agree with Jos
Dehaes that any exposed feature ought to work. I'm not sure I'd call it
a blocker but I do think this is a major bug. The devs are welcome to
disagree with me of course.

My use case is that I'd like to use hibernate so that it doesn't take so
long to boot but if my wife is the next one to use the laptop after me
she ought to be presented with a login screen like she's used to. I'd
say that the switch user functionality would be fine but my laptop
doesn't have enough ram to make that really practical.

In any case if it can't be fixed it should be disabled before dapper
releases.

[Bug 3642] Re: Suspend (or hibernate) does nothing

2006-05-19 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
There are two ways of doing suspend to ram (seemingly). One way
(standby) is fairly common but doesn't save much power. The other way
(ram) is not so common but saves more power. By default dapper defaults
to ram.

See line 8 of /etc/default/acpi-support for further details.
