Ubuntu 9.04 i386 (FRESH INSTALL)
P4 2.2 GHZ
512MB
IDE DVD Burner

these are the steps I execute:

-turn on the PC
-login

-Wait for a moment and then insert a CD (blank, with info etc...)
 or
-Use the PC for a while (1 hour or 2) an then insert a CD

The result is a Desktop without response , I can't do right click on desktop
area and the desktop icons dissapear. The Panels still works i can navigate
trough the windows that I opened (firefox, terminal) .
The PLACES menu shows an item with the icon of a CD and the name of that CD
so I click the item , Nautilus tries to open a window but after a while
nautilus just quit.
I remove the cd and I restart my user session to have my Desktop working
again.

after insert a blank cd

[ 4439.969908] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 0
[ 4440.042251] cdrom: This disc doesn't have any tracks I recognize!

wait for a couple of minutes and then try to open a location with nautilus
with the CD still inside.
