Running gutsy here. esd is not a preferable solution.

This can't be fixed, since we cannot reroute the music to ourselves. Only
esound allows that, using its monitor option.

Thanks for your bug report. vumeter doesn't work with alsa, but works for esd
(sound-events should for example work fine). I forwarded the issue to the
upstream bug tracker: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=337918
