I confirm the following behaviour: when I start totem, or drop a new
video/audio file into it, or when it switches between files via its
playlist, or when it finishes playing, it reduces the system volume,
sometimes to zero. You can see the levels changing by watching an
alsamixer window.

The upstream bug status is marked 'resolved/not a bug', so I don't think
anyone there will be looking at it.
totem is muting audio on my Karmic when I first start it. I vote that
the importance should be marked higher than 'low', since Ubuntu is a
multi-media o/s and this bug makes it look like
