I'm getting a very similar error while trying to add my Lexmark z53 printer.

I have the same issue after the latest dapper update. Here is the relevant
portion of /var/log/cups/error_log:
E [11/Apr/2006:21:11:53 -0400] CUPS-Add-Printer: Unauthorized
E [11/Apr/2006:21:11:53 -0400] copy_model: empty PPD file!
E [11/Apr/2006:21:11:53 -0400] PID 5218 stopped with status 1!

since the latest updates on 12, April 2006 i can now see my printer int he list
again thank you but the adding the printer part is still not working. here is
todays log :
E [12/Apr/2006:06:53:30 -0400] cupsdLoadAllPrinters: Unable to open
/etc/cups/printers.conf - No such file or directory
