After a long hiatus from investigating bugs, I had a bright idea, and the only one I hadn't tried: pop out the burner and /clean the lens/. Lo and behold, my drive is now fully functional. Brasero burns, DVD's are recognized again, and I'm happy. -- Kernel does not recognize blank optical media
