Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

I was watching a live event on NASA TV today, and since the video often
went black, I wanted to try and play it on Totem (Gstreamer). However,
after manually opening Totem, the whole of the screen went just as
black, and I couldn't quit it with CTRL+Q, nor with Esc or F11, or
anything but a cold restart. I repeated it after reboot, just to
reproduce it, and it happened again. If I right-click on the video in
Epiphany, and choose "Open with Movie Player (Xine)", then most of the
times I am told that there is no suitable plugin, while rarely I can
watch the video in the new window. This is all too random for me to get.
I have a Thinkpad R50e, running Juanty fully up-to-date.
