You have been subscribed to a public bug: Did an upgrade from Jaunty to Karmic and the process appeared to work. My Jaunty install was using restricted Nvidia drivers installed via Restricted Drivers tool, rather then Envy.
On reboot, the white Ubuntu logo is present but then the screen goes black and there is a lot of HDD activity (I can tell from the LED that it's a repetitive thing, rather than something like fsck running). If I ctrl-alt-f1 the banner is very flickery and the keyboard is mostly unresponsive. I can restart in recovery mode and delete xorg.conf at which point the machine boots properly and GDM appears. Once I'm logged in I'm unable to get the restricted Nvidia drivers working (any attempts cause the same problem) on reboot.
