Randomly suspend worked again on the affected laptop when connected
via a usb wifi stick instead of the built-in broadcom card.
As I am also affected (probably) by

Attached /var/log/messages (on PC where suspend no longer works) -
includes a number of suspend attempts with subsequent hard powerdown
(holding down power button for a while). See log entries for evening Oct
28 and Oct 30 for resume attempts + reboots
