gedit opens at zero height, with no buffer open. gucharmap behaves the same way as gnome-terminal (i.e. gets shortened to fit and moved fully onto the screen). I was using Breezy before Dapper. I don't know if it's relevant, but I've since played around with xgl/compiz a bit (now back to
