@Nolan I've been using Kubuntu so it may be that we are not talking
about the same issue.
My problem started when I installed Karmic and continued when I upgraded
to Lucid, up until today when I discovered that it was simply a question
of changing the lid-close action in the Ubuntu power managemen
This appears to acutally be a gnome-power-manager bug. ACPI is definitely
getting the event.
I wrote a script: /etc/acpi/local/lid.sh.pre that does the suspend via:
dbus-send --print-reply --system \
--dest=org.freedesktop.DeviceKit.Power \
/org/freedesktop/DeviceK
