I'm seeing this problem right now under Edgy. I notice I have lots of
evil multimedia plugins installed (w32codecs and gstreamer0.10-plugins-
good, -bad, and -ugly). I'll remove as many as possible and see if I can
isolate which one is locking /dev/dsp...

It seems it is gone with the latest updates. I will keep an eye on it,
but you can close this one - I reopen if it happens again and/or I get
more info.

So, the plugins are:
- flash
- java (IBM, since there is not Sun java for linux/ppc)
- mplayer
- desktop file

Not at the moment. The problem appears after I browse for some while (I
do not close my browser for a very long time). I'll try to find the site
causing the problem.

Could this be related to websites using flash, background music or
something similar?

May well be. But it is not a reason to use audio file incorrectly
(exclusively), is it?
JFYI, since I am running ubuntu on ppc, my flash plugin is based on the gnu
code (no native plugin from Macromedia).

It's not a reason, but I believe that there were/are some problems with
that.
Can you reproduce this bug no matter which web pages you are viewing?

No, initially the dsp file is not locked. And I was trying to browse a
bit - the file is still not locked. I will try to find some pattern or
moment when it gets locked...
