Can you check the /var/log/Xorg.*.log files for anything interesting?
Using the 'ati' driver might be worth a try too. (Use dpkg-reconfigure
xserver-xorg for that.)

I checked the log file. I can post the whole thing if you wish, but this

numbers (card0, card1, card2, card3 and
I've tried changing to the ATI driver instead of fglrx. It worked (I
could log out and restart X without problem), but then I lost my 3D
acceleration so that's not an alternative.
