I believe we can safely assume this bug as the same as bug 457870
because its a general case that empathy does not work with gnome-ppp
unless use_conn is unticked in gconf(now dconf-editor)

I tried 10.04, In that also I can't connect to internet. But there is an
option for my BSNL EVDO in network manager.
Also I saw there is a place to edit and create our own Status message in
the MeMenu(if it is the right name). So custom statuses won't be a
problem I think.

No. Because it is not connecting my wireless usb modem.
Somewhere in ubuntu forums and bugs.launchpad I read that some people
are facing the same problems. They also have BSNL EVDO usb wireless
modem from ZTE. With network manager of Ubuntu 9.10, it will not
connect. They also said with an
Vinod, I haveopened an upstream bug report for you. Did you try to
reproduce this bug in Lucid beta1 Live cd. If you do so I should tell
you that there is a bug in beta1 so when you create an account in
empathy it will be created successfully but you will get an error so
when you get that error
does it work if you unlock the keyring somewhere else, ie login in gdm
or using seahorse? or you can try to stop mission-control-5 and restart
empathy which should be working

I un installed, deleted all empathy configuration files and that
mission-control folder.. Then re installed empathy. No way
I am using wvdial to connect to internet and not gnome network manager.
I think because of this I also can't connect to Ubuntu one.

I tried with live cd and obtained the same output that empathy status dropdown
is disabled and the notification-status-applet is also disabled. And it is same
for any accounts like Yahoo or Gmail.
Empathy is not triggering the notification-status-applet to enable the status
change option. But
as we chatted at IRC and it seems that this problem is not related to
empathy its the problem at you end as you were not even able to install
empathy from the telepathy ppa. can you please run ubuntu from a live cd
session and check if it works for you in that case. thanks in advance
