This bug is happening to me too, and I can confirm that it's not happening in other applications that use spell-check such as Tomboy Notes or Firefox. I was able to get a similar spelling check issue in gedit (when turning on autocheck spelling and typing wouldn't). Empathy has this bug, but is ALSO would show (Hello) as a spelling error also (where gedit would not show this as an error).
