I have my computer back now and just checked to to make this is still a bug, but it seems to be working perfectly fine now. An update must have fixed the problem. Unfortunately I had to send the laptop this bug occurs on to be fixed (for an unrelated problem), but it gave me a chance to see if this happens on a desktop computer, and it does not, so it seems to be specific to certain types of cd drives. I'm not the only person to have this problem, however, so faulty hardware seems very unlikely. I will attach a valgrind log as soon as I get the computer back.
