From the discussion on the Red Hat bug we decided that this bug should
probably be fixed in either dbus (preferably) or gnome-vfs. But until
that happens, it's pretty easy to patch Gaim to avoid the crash. We've
posted a patch for v2_0_0beta3 as well as a patch against the v2_0_0
branch of SVN
Fixed with this upload:
gaim (1:2.0.0+beta3-4ubuntu3) edgy; urgency=low
.
* debian/patches/04_gnomevfs_dbus_thread_init_fix_crasher.patch:
- fix locking init between gnomevfs and dbus leading to a crasher
(Ubuntu: #54445)

[edgy] Gaim crashes when I click on save
Got the same thing here too, as well as if I want to save a buddy icon,
so file dialog may be a likely cause? Version: 1:2.0.0+beta3-4ubuntu2

hum, title mention edgy and easy to get, I'm wondering if that's not an
issue simular to what muine guy had, gnome-vfs initialize dbus now and
some other lib might be doing the same and that's creating issues with
the locking

This is probably the same as the muine crasher.
Essentially:
dbus locking has two states: initialised and not
If it's not initialised then the function to allocate a lock returns a
bogus value (0xabcdef) and the lock and unlock functions are no-ops.
If it's initialised then the new function
Why does DBus do that? Shouldn't it return NULL instead of a made up
value?

confirmed here. Could be related to bug #54879, that is, it crashes
whenever tries to open a file browse dialog.
The backtrace when clicking save as in a conversation is attached.

Thanks for your bug report. Can you start gaim from the terminal and see
if it writes 'Segmentation fault.'? If so, it'd be nice if you could get
a backtrace as outlined over here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace
