Oh i see. Sorry about the misunderstanding. Are you sure that Xchat is
compatible with that feature? I know empath and pidgin are compatible
with the tray but I dont think Xchat is. I tried it over here as well
and like you said it can be put into the system tray area but it cannot
be hidden
Did you set that option in the settings menu?

In Xchat go to SettingsPreferencesChattingAlerts
Make sure the box that says Enable system tray icon is checked. Now when you
close it you can have it minimize to system tray.

Please elaborate on the problem as you see it. You were able to hide
the xchat-gnome window previously? I don't use empathy so just like
empathy does doesn't really make your bug report clear.
Also, I tend to prefer that when I close xchat-gnome, that it actually
closes, so if you wish it to do
