This is still a problem in natty also. The good news is that it is already
logged upstream by one of the gnome-settings-daemon developers:

The issue is an upstream one and it would be nice if somebody having it

This is not really related to the synaptics driver. The problem is that
the gnome-settings-daemon is executed only after you log in.

not especiall but thanks for asking, it's just one of those thousand
small issues we have registered it's waiting now for somebody to pick it
up and debug but seems rather low priority on the list, most likely not
something for lucid in any case
