We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response
from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please
feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could,
please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this

This weird reason was that I named the host mail.local. And by default,
*.local are in ignored hosts.

Out of some weird reason, evolution used the proxy if the name was not
in /etc/hosts. When I add the servers IP to System-Preferences-Network
proxy-Ignored Hosts, it works.

Just tried the DNS hostname of the server. Does not work either, even
though ping/dig/hostname all give the correct result. Even reverse
lookups work properly. The only way it works here is with an entry in
/etc/hosts
