This bug is fixed in Maverick, but not in Lucid LTS.
Tired of waiting for a fix for the LTS, I found the patch and recompiled
libgtk2.0-0_2.20.1-0ubuntu2.
Get the sources for libgtk2.0 via apt-get source, apply the patch available
here:
Looks like this bug made it to maverick.
It also happens when sorting by filename by clicking on the Name column
header as well, I didn't notice that at first.

To reproduce just open a file chooser with any app (e.g. Firefox, go to File -
Open File), navigate to a folder containing some files and folders, and click
